St. Paul Women’s Society - Traer recently received a St. Katharine Drexel Grant from The Catholic Foundation in the Archdiocese of Dubuque (CFAD) for its sewing project outreach. The grant specifically supports the members ability to sew lap quilts for local nursing homes and veteran’s hospitals as well as baby items for various organizations in the diocese.
St. Paul Women’s Society was established to foster the spiritual welfare of all members as well as cultivate a spirit of friendship and cooperation among the parish community and together benefit those who are less fortunate. Through the St. Katharine Drexel Grant, the society obtained sewing machines that will generate resources for those in care centers, families with new babies and those without homes.
CFAD’s St. Katharine Drexel Grant helps Catholic organizations in the Archdiocese of Dubuque with new projects that provide a Work of Mercy needed in their area and/or new evangelization efforts to bring people closer to Christ and His Church. “Every lap quilt, blanket or layette is made with love and provides hope and support for all who receive it,” said Marilyn Svoboda, women’s society member. In addition to the sewing that can now all be done at the church because of the grant, the society also hand weaves plastic sleeping mats for the homeless and donates 100 pounds of food to the food bank.
